Round 16 at Hastings was played on the 26th of August 1895.
There were no problem games in this round, so it is a good opportunity to look at the standings in the tournament with five rounds to go.
Cheshire occasionally says who the leaders were at various stages but did not supply a list of results or table of cumulative scores. So we have had to reconstruct the latter, using the list of round-by-round results helpfully supplied by Schallopp.
These show that after 8 rounds Chigorin had been in the lead with 7 points. Pillsbury and von Bardeleben were half a point behind and Lasker with 6 points was in fourth place. Vergani, who had lost seven games straight, finally scored his first half point in round eight.
Thereafter the lead kept changing hands between three players while, over the next eight rounds, Von Bardeleben collapsed and only scored two points. He became unwell acording to Cheshire and eventually had to forfeit one of the later rounds.
After 13 rounds Lasker took the sole lead with 10.5 points while Chigorin and Pillsbury were on 10.
After today's 16th round Chigorin and Lasker shared the lead with 13 points and Pillsbury was half a point behind them on 12.5.
With five rounds to go, it was nearly certain that the winner must be one of those three because Steinitz, in fourth place, was only on 10 points followed by Walbrodt on 9.5 points and Dr. Tarrasch on 9.
In this round, five of the six leading players won their games; only the Berlin master Walbrodt was held to a draw.
The remaining cumulative scores were as follows:
8.5 Schiffers and Von Bardeleben;
8 Mason, Pollock and Schlechter;
7.5 Blackburne and Burn;
7 Gunsberg and Teichmann;
6.5 Burn, Janowski and Tinsley;
6 Albin and Marco;
4.5 Mieses;
3 Vergani.
There would be more twists to come.
This series will continue later this week with Round 17 and onwards...
