Senior chess opportunities

This is the start of a new feature on our website, for older players who are qualified to play in Senior tournaments.

Some of these (especially German Senior tournaments) are run on the 60+ age group rule, but FIDE events are organised in two age categories, based on your age at 31 December in the year concerned. If you were born in 1966 you will have to wait a few more months...

This photograph, showing Tim Harding in the foreground, was taken at the 2015 World Senior Championships at Acqui Terme, Italy, where the 2017 championships will be this month, starting on Tuesday 7 November.

Entries for that event have now officially closed. on 30 September.

For tournaments next year the qualifying dates for the two FIDE age groups are 31 December 1968 (for the 50+ Open and Women's tournaments) and 31 December 1953 for the 65+ championships

In England, the annual Beacon Seniors (65+ and 50+) in Exmouth, Devon, will be held from 6-10 November 2017 (5 rounds). Details can be downloaded here (PDF format). The qualifying date for age groups is 5 November 2017.
